Product Overview- TCP AppScope Version 1.3

sm_fullscreen.gif (5477 bytes)TCP AppScope is a highly-specialized network management tool designed to monitor client/server transactions that use the Internet's TCP/IP protocols. TCP AppScope can be configured to monitor any type of client/server interaction including: Web Server traffic (WWW/HTTP), FTP traffic, E-Mail traffic (SMTP/POP3), Telnet traffic, or any other client/server oriented Internet application protocol.

TCP AppScope has a multitude of uses on IP-based networks, including:

  • Monitor the amount of traffic being generated by the Web servers on your network.
  • Automatically determine which computers on your network are acting as servers for particular applications, e.g., WWW servers or FTP servers.
  • Automatically determine which client computers are accessing the Web servers on your network, no matter where on the Internet they may be located.
  • Subdivide the traffic observed on busy Internet backbone segments, allowing any of its functions to be applied to only a subset of the network traffic monitored.
  • Monitor the rate of traffic being handled by the Web or FTP servers on your network.

TCP AppScope lets you choose to look at your network from either the Server perspective or the client perspective. Thus, even if you do not run a farm of Web or FTP servers, you can use TCP AppScope to monitor and assess the amount, sources, and destinations of any client traffic for a specific application protocol or set of protocols. For example, how much WWW traffic are clients on a particular subnetwork generating and which web site are those client computers connecting to?

TCP AppScope performs its functions by passively monitoring the network, where servers and clients actually communicate with each other, rather than examining server log files or other second-hand sources of information as our competitors do. Because of this, TCP AppScope performs its functions in real-time, and can easily combine information about multiple servers and/or clients as it observes them.

TCP AppScope integrates with the programs of the LANdecoder NMS. In particular, if LANdecoder32 is installed, TCP AppScope is enabled to support full packet filter and capture functionality of the Application-level traffic being monitored, with protocol decoding provided by LANdecoder32.

The following features and capabilities were included in release v1.3:

  • Removed limitation of 256 files in "Capture to File" operation. Now up to 65535 files may be handled.
  • Alarm messages and notifications are now timestamped and logged.
  • A new "Host Rate" window has been added, to show the octet/frame traffic rates per/second and per/minute for selected groups of hosts.
  • New support for user-configurable memory usage in local NDIS and AccuCapture drivers. User's can now determine how many items should be allocated for the Host, Conversation, High-Level Host and High-Level Conversation functions of the local drivers.
  • Greatly improved efficiency for maintaining and displaying host/conversation data where thousands of hosts/conversations are displayed.

TCP AppScope provides a new benchmark for Application-level network monitoring in the Windows environment.

TCP AppScope V1.3 is available now for shipment. Contact Triticom Sales at (952) 829-8019 or E-mail us via the Contact Us page.

Product Specifications

TCP AppScope

IP Application-Level Monitoring

VERSION 1.3

TCP AppScope is a network monitoring product designed to monitor client/server transactions that use the Internet's TCP/IP protocols. TCP AppScope can be configured to monitor any type of client/server interaction including: Web Server traffic (WWW/HTTP), FTP traffic (SMTP/POP3), Telnet traffic, or any other Client/Server oriented Internet application protocol.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

  • Microsoft Windows 9X/ME/2000/XP
  • Minimum of 64 MB of RAM
  • 166 Mhz Pentium
  • One supported Ethernet adapter or a compatible NIC that supports a promiscuous NDIS driver, including CardBus and WIN9X PPP adapters

SYSTEM RECOMMENDATIONS

  • 233 Mhz Pentium-II processor
  • 128 MB of RAM
  • Monitor resolution of 800 x 600 or higher

TOPOLOGY SUPPORT

  • 10 Mbps Ethernet
  • 100 Mbps Ethernet
  • 4 Mbps Token-Ring
  • 16 Mbps Token-Ring

PURPOSE AND USAGE

TCP AppScope has a multitude of uses on any IP-based network. For example, it can easily be used to:

  • Monitor the amount of traffic being generated by the Web Servers on your network.
  • Automatically determine which computers on your network are acting as Servers for particular applications and which are Clients. Automatically determine which Client computers are accessing the Web servers on your network, no matter where on the Internet they may be located.
  • Subdivide the observed traffic on busy Internet backbone segments, allowing any of its functions to be applied to only a subset of the network traffic monitored.

SERVER/CLIENT VIEWPOINT

TCP AppScope also lets you choose to look at your network from either the Server perspective or from the Client perspective. Thus, even if you do not run a farm of Web or FTP servers, you can use TCP AppScope to monitor and assess the amount, sources, and destinations of any Client traffic for a particular application protocol or set of protocols. For example, how much WWW traffic are clients on a particular subnetwork generating, and which web sites are those Client computers connecting to?

PASSIVE MONITORING

TCP AppScope performs its functions by passively monitoring the network, where Servers and Clients actually communicate with each other, rather than by examining server log files or other second-hand sources of information as other products do. Because of this, TCP AppScope performs its functions in real-time, and can easily combine information about multiple Servers and/or Clients as it observes them.

LANDECODER32 INTEGRATION

TCP AppScope integrates with other products in Triticom's LANdecoder Network Management Suite. In particular, if Triticom's LANdecoder32 Protocol Analyzer product is installed, TCP AppScope can capture the application-level communications it is monitoring and they can be fully decoded in the Decoder module of LANdecoder32.

TRAFFIC MONITORING

TCP AppScope features sophisticated application traffic monitoring functions. A robust set of reports can be generated at user-specified time intervals and exported and studied in popular spreadsheet applications. Several real-time displays, graphs, and network alarms can be configured. Additionally, remote alarm notification via pager or e-mail is available.  Alarm messages and notifications are now time-stamped and logged.

VIEW NETWORK HEALTH STATISTICS VIA WEB BROWSER

By properly configuring a WWW server, and then saving Web Export reports to that server, network statistics may be viewed using a Web browser. This is accomplished using Triticom’s WWW Report Viewer HTML pages and Java applets, which are included with TCP AppScope.

MONITORING INTERFACES

There are two separate methods to perform network monitoring: Microsoft's NDIS drivers and Triticom's AccuCapture Drivers. The NDIS drivers allow you to use the same adapter simultaneously for network monitoring operations while talking with servers and other workgroup computers. For maximum performance and high-fidelity statistic reporting, we recommend installing a supported adapter which is dedicated to TCP AppScope using an AccuCapture Driver. Triticom designed its direct-to-the-adapter AccuCapture Drivers with the sole purpose of streamlining and optimizing Ethernet network monitoring and frame capture under Windows 9X/ME/2000/XP.

You can count on Triticom to deliver high-performance, high-function, low-cost network management solutions. In addition, Triticom products are all available individually. You only buy what you need today.
